Shane Dunleavy is a member of the KÜHL Masters and CX team. He was born in Perth, Australia, but currently makes his home in Sandy, Utah. Shane_1 How did you get into cycling? I've always had a bike, from about 4 years old on. I got my first MTB around 1982 and did a few races for fun then used it for offseason conditioning when I was a World Cup Freestyle skier in my 20's.  I picked up a road bike in my 30's and raced it heavily through my 40's. Discovered Cyclocross about 5 years ago and have been doing a lot more riding on the dirt the last couple years. Cycling satisfies my competitive streak and gives me an amazing sense of freedom. I love the speed and the challenge of constantly pushing yourself to be better. What's your most memorable adventure? Eating and riding our way through northern Italy with my fiancee Amy the week after she won the bronze Medal for the Masters Worlds TT. We rode both sides of the Stelvio pass with a foray into Switzerland with nothing but a map drawn on a napkin for navigation. If you could adventure anywhere in the world for a week or two, where would you go? It's hard to choose! Trekking around Patagonia or Iceland or sailing the Caribbean or doing some CX racing in Belgium. Who inspires you? My mother. She didn’t finish 10th grade, was self taught and is the smartest and toughest person I know. She has run successful businesses all over the world and is now in high demand as a consultant. What is your favorite piece of gear? My Vermarc/KÜHL zip off warm-ups. They keep me warm til seconds before the race then I can just rip them off like stripper pants. Shane_WhiteRim What song makes you most stoked to play/compete hard? The Voice by John Farnham just makes me want to race. What’s your favorite food and drink after an adventure? After a hot one, a Mexi-coke and salt and vinegar potato chips. After a cross race it’s tough to beat beer and a brat. What's your worst habit? N+ 1. I never seem to have enough bikes. Right now I’m in desperate need of at least 2 more bikes because somehow the 10 or so that I have just aren’t enough. Shane_2 What law(s) have you broken that resulted in a good story? What’s the story? I had a Datsun 240Z in high school, and one night wanted to find out how fast it was. Got it up to about 130mph on a farm road, but unfortunately the brakes weren't as good as the motor. I couldn’t stop when I got to a T in the road and flew up an embankment, over a dirt road and landed with the front wheels in an irrigation canal. I walked five miles home and came back with a friend in the morning to drag it out with his truck. A cop came by while we were pulling it out and asked what happened. I didn't lie and told him the brakes failed. He shook his head, said uh-huh, and drove off. Best way to end a first date? Anticipating the next one. What's hot/what's not? Racing and riding with friends and teammates, laughing and having fun/Whiners and sandbaggers Kuhl_BikeTeam What's the worst injury sustained from adventuring and how did you recover? I was hit by a car riding home; concussion, lots of stitches and bruises, and a couple broken toes. Still recovering, but back on the bike and racing CX! What the fastest speed you’ve ever gone under your own power, assisted by gravity? 63 mph drafting behind a truck going downhill. 39 mph in a finishing sprint in a crit. What’s your favorite thing about KÜHL? I love the commitment to high quality, comfortable men's clothing that looks fantastic. It was the bulk of my wardrobe before I joined the team. What’s your favorite piece of KÜHL clothing? How do you use it? That's a tough one! I work in Kuhl clothing, I play in it and I go out in it. If I had to pick I’d have to say Rydr Pants and the Kommando Crew Long Sleeve. I have multiple colors of both and wear them all the time from work to play and everything in between. If your best friend already had your favorite piece of KÜHL gear, what would you recommend to him/her that functions just as well playing outside as it does in the bar at the end of the day? The Krux shorts are awesome and a 3-season favorite for me.
